Wythe Physician Practices is pleased to welcome Dr. Oscar Figueroa, a highly experienced
pulmonologist, who will begin seeing patients in early May 2025. A native of Lima, Peru, Dr.
Figueroa brings nearly four decades of critical care and pulmonary expertise to Wytheville and
the surrounding region.
Dr. Figueroa specializes in treating asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), smoking cessation, sleep apnea, lung cancer screening and prevention, and other general pulmonary disorders. His deep commitment to patient care, combined with extensive experience across hospitals nationwide, positions him as Wytheville’s foremost pulmonologist.
He and his wife, whom he married in 1994, currently reside in Bluefield. Together, they have three sons. “I had an office in Wytheville in the past ” as well as a Sleep clinic in Hillsville, VA. He also worked for The Carillion New River hospital in Christiansburg , quickly becoming familiar with the area and its communities. For ten years, he also treated patients at the Veterans Hospital in Beckley, West Virginia. “There are not a lot of specialists like me in the area,” he said. “So I had to spread myself pretty far and wide.”
Dr. Figueroa earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima in 1983. After permanently moving to the United States in 1986, he completed his residency at the Medical College of Ohio. He then pursued further training at the University of Miami in Florida.
He is board-certified in both Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Sleep Medicine.
His path to medicine was inspired by family. “When I was growing up in Peru,” Dr. Figueroa explained in an April 29th phone interview, “I had an aunt who wanted to be a physician but wasn’t allowed to, simply because she was a woman. When I was born, she told me that if I became a physician, she would pay for my prep school training. I gave it a try and decided to stay with it.”
That same aunt, now 94 years old, still lives in Peru and is no doubt proud of the path Dr. Figueroa chose. He was also influenced by other family members in science and medicine. “My uncle was a physician,” he said. “My father and two brothers were all engineers.”
Dr. Figueroa learned English at a young age through a British school where he studied from kindergarten through high school. His connection to the U.S. began during his medical training, when he befriended American missionaries from Texas who visited Peru on mission trips. During those visits, he served as their English–Spanish translator. “I was about to start my last year of medical school when my friends from Houston invited me to come to America to live and work,” he recalled. “The opportunity arose, and I thought, ‘why not?’ I knew it would be a great opportunity.”
He worked in Grand Rapids, Michigan, before moving to Bluefield, West Virginia, where he
opened his own practice in 2001. Over the next 23 years, he became a well-respected presence
in the community and a trusted specialist across the region.
In addition to clinical expertise, Dr. Figueroa has been a strong advocate for addressing addiction-related health issues. “Nicotine is a very addictive substance,” he explained. “To overcome the addiction, you need a support group committed to helping you quit—and you're also going to need medical therapy.”
He sees a similar pattern with sleep apnea and obesity. “Millions of Americans are overweight because they are addicted to sugar,” he said. “It’s the same type of addiction as smoking. Both reduce your lifespan by about a decade. The analogy between the two is amazing.”
Dr. Figueroa now looks forward to continuing his work in Wytheville. His office is located at 590 West Ridge Road, Suite F, and he is currently accepting new patients. For appointments, call 276-250-2121 to schedule a consultation for all your pulmonary care needs. With compassion, experience, and a tireless work ethic, Dr. Figueroa is ready to help the people of Wytheville breathe easier and live healthier lives.
